CO₂ Systems

At JJ Aquariums, we specialize in professional CO₂ systems designed to support healthy plant growth, stable aquariums, and long-term success. Properly installed CO₂ is one of the most critical components in a planted aquarium and precision matters.

We focus on reliable, proven equipment and expert installation to ensure safe, consistent, and controllable CO₂ delivery for every system we build.

What Is CO₂?

CO₂ (carbon dioxide) is a naturally occurring gas that plays a critical role in planted aquariums. In a controlled aquarium environment, CO₂ is introduced in precise amounts to support healthy plant growth and overall system balance.

In nature, aquatic plants rely on dissolved CO₂ found in water. In closed aquarium systems, those levels are often insufficient especially in high-end, densely planted aquariums—making supplemental CO₂ essential.

What Does CO₂ Do for an Aquarium?

When properly installed and regulated, CO₂ provides several key benefits:

  • Promotes strong, healthy plant growth

  • Enhances color, density, and leaf structure

  • Supports stable biological balance

  • Reduces algae by allowing plants to outcompete it

CO₂ allows plants to efficiently photosynthesize, turning light and nutrients into healthy growth. Without adequate CO₂, even the best lighting and filtration systems cannot perform to their full potential.

Professional CO₂ Matters

CO₂ must be delivered accurately and consistently. Improper systems or poor installation can lead to unstable levels, stressed livestock, or plant failure. That’s why JJ Aquariums focuses on professional-grade equipment and precise installation ensuring safe, stable results over the long term.

A properly tuned CO₂ system transforms an aquarium from simply planted to truly thriving.

Green Leaf Aquariums is the only CO₂ regulator we primarily use and install.

GLA systems are known for precision regulators, rock-solid solenoids, and long-term reliability. Their equipment allows exact control over CO₂ output, ensuring stable levels that promote strong plant growth without stressing livestock.

We choose GLA for its:

  • Industry-leading regulator quality

  • Consistent and precise CO₂ delivery

  • Clean, professional installation aesthetics

  • Proven reliability in high-end planted aquariums

When installed correctly, GLA CO₂ systems integrate seamlessly into luxury aquascapes and competition-level planted tanks alike.

CO₂ Diffusion Methods We Use

How CO₂ is diffused into an aquarium is just as important as the regulator itself. At JJ Aquariums, we select diffusion methods based on tank size, layout, aesthetics, and performance requirements ensuring efficient absorption with minimal visual impact.

CO₂ Reactors

  • For high-demand or larger systems, we use Green Leaf Aquariums CO₂ reactors.
Reactors provide highly efficient CO₂ dissolution outside the aquarium, delivering consistent levels without visible bubbles. This method is ideal for clean, equipment-hidden installations.

In-Tank CO₂ Diffusers

  • For most standard planted aquariums, we primarily use Neo diffusers.
Neo diffusers are compact, reliable, and visually subtle, producing fine mist bubbles that dissolve efficiently while maintaining a clean look inside the tank.

  • For high-end and showcase aquariums, we use Aqua Design Amano (ADA) glass diffusers. ADA diffusers are chosen when aesthetics matter most, blending seamlessly into premium aquascapes while delivering precise CO₂ diffusion.

Inline CO₂ Diffusers

  • For systems with external filtration, we use inline diffusers from Ultum Nature Systems (UNS) and Green Leaf Aquariums. Inline diffusion keeps all equipment out of the display, offering excellent efficiency and a completely uncluttered aquarium appearance.

Each aquarium is evaluated individually to determine the most effective and visually appropriate CO₂ diffusion method.
